Competition

by Melissa Rose on March 8, 2010

It’s raining again.  And cold!  Raining and cold – two weather characteristics that aren’t so typical in the desert southwest.

The hills/mountains surrounding the Valley are generally the prettiest in the spring (in my opinion) when the plants bloom.  Because of all of the rain, little sprouts of green grass are budding where there is typically only dirt, making the desert scenery even more beautiful (if one likes cacti and bushes with thorns.)  I’d take a picture of the hills/mountains, but quite frankly I’m a wuss and it’s too cold outside.  I have plenty of other green things shooting up from the ground that I can photograph (though not necessarily admire.)

So…competition; the thing we hate, the thing that motivates us to create new ideas or the thing that prevents us from taking new products to the market.  Some entrepreneurs wouldn’t think twice about their competitors while others spend much of their time trying to figure out how they are different.  After all, one doesn’t need to invent the wheel, just make it better.

I was talking to a guy at Gangplank last week.  They have a great philosophy when it comes to competition.  See, the guys over at Gangplank understand the value of human capital and the skill sets they bring to the table.  They believe there’s more power in collaboration of skill sets than believing everything and everyone is a competitor.  Through collaboration, talented individuals are able to innovate more and be more productive.  Time isn’t wasted competing unnecessarily, but rather producing innovations that ultimately benefit communities.

Business owners don’t have to go it alone.  In fact, there’s a plethora of talented, resourceful people in every community to serve as business partners.

This month I am working on the formation of the Arizona Entrepreneurship Coalition.   The idea for the coalition came when the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education notified me that it was National Entrepreneurship Week; yet there was nothing going on in AZ.  I contacted the Consortium with an idea for the coalition and viola!!!  The coalition will be a community-driven organization designed to provide education, mentoring and resources to existing and budding entrepreneurs in one central location.  It’s a collaboration of human capital/talent who understand the value of strengthening communities through entrepreneurship.

So for now…I’m back to watching the rain water dry and the weeds grow.

Oh, and I found a dead scorpion in my bedroom.

Success to you.
