Small businesses in the US are the largest employer, creating over half the jobs today. The US Dept. of Commerce estimates that the country needs seven million new jobs to cover what was lost with the recession and an additional 13 million more over the next decade just to keep up with population growth. The 17,000 large businesses and the government will not likely be the source for the additional 20 million jobs needed to keep this country employed. Of the 12 million jobs created in 2007, eight million came from young companies (one to five years.) If startups were taken out of the equation, net job growth would be negative.
