One Day at a Time

by Melissa Rose on June 1, 2010

The laundry list.  We all have one.  It’s the list of things that need to be accomplished and though we seem to get some done, the list is always building.  The “to dos” breed, like rabbits or all of the “stuff” in my house that I’m sure I didn’t buy.  I’ve got a huge laundry list brewing just like many small business owners and my goal is to get it whittled down to a level that won’t perpetuate insanity.

Since I last blogged, I met with Phil Lechter of Pay Your Family First.  They have a board game called Thrive Time that teaches kids financial literacy.  Syd and I spent some time playing it and Syd ended up the bigger winner.  (The game had me purchase a bike that put me in the hole by $750.  Maybe this is why I have stuff in my house that breeds?)

I also recently gave a presentation to the Scottsdale Workforce Development Committee regarding youth entrepreneurship and the benefits of getting the kids exposed early on.  I shared the meeting with Merna Gill from Jobs for Arizona Graduates.  Merna and I have the same goals in mind – to help prepare the next generation to become employers or employees.

But my laundry list continues to grow.  There’s sales people to hire and train and presentations to prepare.  There’s website copy to rewrite and the new merchant services account to set up.  And there’s a doggie door to install and a dress to try to squeeze into for my brother’s wedding this coming weekend.

One day at a time.

Success to you!

Melissa

The problem with my to-do lists is that new higher priority items keep getting added to the top of the list and the bottom items leap to their untimely deaths until new life is breathed into them and they return to the top of the list. It just never ends.

I have to ask myself on each item: How important is it really?

The rule of thumb is that if you don’t want to tackle a particular task, then it’s probably the one you should do first. Doesn’t typically make for a motivated rise out of bed in the morning though.
